Chimneys in Sumner

Sumner is a city in northern Pierce County, with Puyallup to the west, Auburn to the north and Bonney Lake to the east. It began in 1853 as Stuck Junction and was platted in 1883 by George H. Ryan, in expectation of a stop on the Northern Pacific Railway. That makes the oldest part of town more than 140 years old, and the chimneys that survive there have been through every kind of Puget Sound winter.

The 2020 census counted 10,621 people and 4,492 housing units. The city is flat and low, at 52 feet above sea level, and about 7.6 square miles in size. Rain runs off roofs onto ground that stays soft for much of the year, and damp air collects at the base of old brick as well as at the top.

Sumner is best known for rhubarb. It calls itself the Rhubarb Pie Capital of the World, and every year holds Rhubarb Days. It also hosts part of the Daffodil Parade in April. The city also lies in a lahar hazard zone for Mount Rainier, so many homeowners already think about what the ground and weather can do. A yearly chimney check is a small, practical part of that.

Questions from Sumner homeowners

I live in one of Sumner's older neighborhoods. Where do I begin?

Begin with a standard inspection, then ask about the camera. A century-old flue can crack where nobody can see it from the room.

Why does the elevation matter for a chimney?

Sumner sits at about 52 feet, low in the valley. Low ground tends to be damp, and brick on a damp site stays wet longer.

Do you come to Sumner from Seattle?
