Chimneys in Pacific

Pacific sits on the lower White River, which also goes by the name Stuck River, between Auburn and Sumner. The city covers a little over two square miles at an elevation of only 72 feet. Most of it is in King County. In 1995 Pacific annexed a piece of unincorporated Pierce County, so the county line now cuts through the city.

The place started as a real estate venture. Promoter Clarence Dayton Hillman platted it in 1906 as Pacific City, planning to benefit from the nearby Puget Sound Electric Railway that ran to Seattle and Tacoma. Pacific was approved as a town of the fourth class in 1909. Its housing count has grown slowly since: 2,090 units in 2000, 2,422 in 2010 and 2,485 in 2020.

The river has shaped life here in other ways too. In 2009 a large release of water from Mud Mountain Dam caused fast and heavy flooding in Pacific. Low ground that has seen floods is damp ground, and damp ground is hard on masonry. Chimneys in a valley like this tend to stay wet after rain, so a good crown, a tight cap and sound flashing are the things to check first.

Questions from Pacific homeowners

Is Pacific in King County or Pierce County?

Mostly King County. The city annexed a piece of unincorporated Pierce County in 1995, so the line runs through it. We serve both sides.

Does low ground near the river matter for my chimney?

It can. Damp air and ground keep brick wet longer, so check the crown, cap and flashing, and reseal brick that stays dark after a dry spell.

Do you come out to Pacific from Seattle?

Yes. Call with your address and we will confirm that we can come and when.
