Chimneys in Woodinville
Woodinville lies east of Bothell and northeast of Kirkland in northern King County, in the valley of the Sammamish River. The city is about 5.6 square miles in size, at an elevation of 174 feet, and it keeps waterfront parks along the river.
It began as a logging community and later turned to farming. After World War II it developed as a suburb of Seattle, which brought a wave of new housing to the area. The railroad that once ran through it, the Woodinville Subdivision, carried freight until 2008 and has since become part of the Eastside Rail Corridor trail.
Today the area is better known for wine. There are approximately 130 wineries and tasting rooms in and around the city, and Chateau Ste. Michelle is among them. The 2020 census counted 13,069 people and 5,895 housing units, with 7.2 percent of units vacant. A city with that mix of older suburban houses and newer buildings keeps us busy with ordinary work: sweeping, damper repair, mortar repointing, and the yearly inspection that tells an owner which of the three is next.
